North Texas Giving Day
North Texas Giving Day is TODAY, and The Cowtown’s C.A.L.F. (Children’s Activities for Life and Fitness) Program is looking for some “Go-Givers” to invest in low-income children who dream of running The Cowtown.
Several years ago, a local third grader joined his running club at Joy James Elementary in Fort Worth. That same year, he got to run his first Cowtown Kids 5K, and he was hooked. In the triumph that followed his race, he actually uttered these words: “When I grow up, I’m going to come back and win the whole thing.”
Fast forward to this year’s Cowtown Marathon—and that little boy, Gabriel Zambrano, is all grown up. Sure enough, he kept his word, spoken as an elementary school dreamer—and that dream came true.
He WON The 2019 Cowtown Marathon—all 26.2 miles of it.

For more inspiration behind this year’s Cowtown winner, Gabriel Zambrano, we asked him to share what ignited his dreams all those years ago. Without missing a beat, he credits The Cowtown Kids 5K as the fuel that ignited his running fire. He was only 8 years old at the time.
Secondly, he recalls a movie that he watched as a youngster with his Dad starring the legendary runner, Steve Prefontaine. Young Gabriel’s running fire continued to burn as he joined a competitive summer track program, and by the time he was in high school, he was becoming a recognizably gifted across the state of Texas.
In 2012, in his senior year at Castleberry High School, he won The 2012 UIL State Championship in the 3200 meters (2 miles).
Perhaps the best part of Gabriel’s story is that what started at The Cowtown decades ago has trickled down into a whole new generation of dreamers like himself. Gabriel now has children of his own—and they love running warm-ups and cool-downs with their gifted Daddy. Additionally, they enjoy doing local fun-runs and 1K races.
Your tax-deductible donation can help other North Texas children’s fitness dreams come true. The Cowtown’s C.A.L.F. Program has given away more than 31,000 pairs of running shoes in the past decade—and we need your support to keep those dreams alive.
